L’Argent (1983), directed by Robert Bresson, follows the path of a counterfeit banknote that the main character, Yvon, receives at a photo shop and, upon trying to exchange it, gets arrested, wants revenge and ends up in poverty and crime. La Jetée (1962), directed by Chris Marker, is a French science fiction film that consists almost completely of still photos and tells the story about a future world after a nuclear war, where the only hope for saving mankind is time travelling. Dreams That Money Can Buy (1947), directed by Hans Richter, is a film about a man who sets up a business selling dreams to people who can’t have any of there own. Each dream is a story in the story and is a satire of the conventional relationships of that time. Can money buy imagination?
These films will be mixed with contemporary documentaries that illuminate the subject of this exhibition, dealing with the fears and hopes associated with the end of money. The documentaries Les Glaneurs et la Glaneuse (2000), directed by Agnès Varda and Living without Money (2011), directed by Line Halvorsen, present alternative ways of living without money, either by force or voluntarily. The Gleaners & I tracks a series of gleaners who hunt for food, scraps and personal connection in potato farms around France. Living without Money follows the life of the 68-year-old Heidemarie Schwermer, who decided 14 years ago to stop using money and live with only a suitcase full of clothes. How does your daily life look like when money is (almost) factored out of it?
The one-day screening will take place on Sunday 26 June 2011 from 12 to 6 pm, and is organized by Juan A. Gaitán and Mariska Oosterloo.
