The Webkit team introduced CSS gradients on April 14th, 2008. Shortly afterwards they presented it to the W3C for consideration as a recommendation. Sometime later, Mozilla decided to implement CSS gradients using the same notation the Webkit gradients, but with the -moz prefix.
