EU curbs on food speculation could still leave millions hungry, activists warn | Global development

Proposed EU rules designed to curb speculation on food and
other commodities are not strict enough and could still see price spikes that
leave millions hungry, a coalition of NGOs has warned. In January 2014, the EU
agreed to introduce controls to regulate excessive price speculation by
limiting the use of financial instruments linked to commodities – such as
sugar, wheat and corn – which has been blamed for food price increases.
